A LITTLE SOMETHING TO READ
Story & history
Guozao: Wuhan’s morning meal
In Wuhan, breakfast is called “guozao”: stopping for a bite before the day gets under way. Hot dry noodles are one of its signature bowls. In old Hankou, their low cost and quick service suited a busy port, where boatmen, wharf workers and merchants ate as they travelled. A familiar tale credits the dish to a 1930s noodle seller who accidentally mixed sesame oil into cooked noodles; it remains a local origin story, not a verified record.
