Story & history

Nanning’s evenings of liao luo

In Nanning, liao luo is an invitation to eat snails together at night. Nantie is the local name for a neighborhood around Hengyang West Road, where many railway workers live. By April 2023, its night-market scene included stir-fried snails with sour bamboo, perilla and chili, alongside clay-pot versions. Zhongshan Road also had residents and visitors eating snails among other street snacks. This is a local evening-food tradition, while each cook’s seasonings and heat can vary.
