A CLOSER LOOK

How to recognize it

Small swollen oval or spindle-shaped roots, with brown skin and a pale interior. Despite the local name renshenguo, the edible part is a root rather than a fleshy fruit.

In the kitchen

Cooked and combined with yogurt or used in porridge.

Roots vary in size and shape; dried forms are also used. The bare name renshenguo can refer to a different food in other contexts.
