A LITTLE SOMETHING TO READ

Story & history

A family meal becomes a roadside specialty

In Gan Xiaofang’s family memory, lemon duck moved from the home table to a roadside shop. In the early 1980s, her father and grandfather sold porridge and noodles at Jiepai on the Yongwu road. Passing drivers wanted a more filling meal and enjoyed duck cooked with the family’s preserved sour lemons. Rice and lemon duck joined the menu, and some drivers took portions away. This is one family’s route to the dish’s local popularity.
