Story & history

Sand cake boxed for the Spring Festival

In January 2021, cakes at the Wu-family workshop in Nakan, Ningming, were cut into blocks, lifted from their frame, portioned, vacuum-packed and placed in boxes. These small portions belong to a larger Spring Festival tradition: sand cake is a seasonal gift in Ningming. Haiyuan, Nakan and Mingjiang have local versions. The familiar sweet is made from fine glutinous-rice flour, sugar and sesame, pressed into a flat slab before cutting.
