Story & history

A wife’s winter-melon pastry

One Guangzhou legend tells of a Chaozhou pastry cook who brought shop pastries home to his wife. She said her own winter-melon pastries were better and made some for him to take back to his colleagues. The tale says they nicknamed the pastries “wife cake.” The craft of making Cantonese wife cakes is also listed among Guangzhou’s municipal intangible cultural heritage projects.
